  • in the bedroom...

I know the title sounds intriguing, and trust me, this post is going to fill some kind of need, though I'm not sure it will be the one you were looking for.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am OBSESSIVE about home décor and design. I find something I love, I look at the price tag, I obsess over the spend and then find myself falling down the rabbit hole of assessing and attempting to reject and guilt my own privilege.

    "do I NEED this?"

"will my life be better if I have it?"

"think about all of those other people who don't even HAVE one of these and now I'm going to spend *insert dollar amount* one a new one, when I already have one?!?"

but, aside from my own personal torment of having a hobby that seems unnecessary and over the top to some (Mr. V, I'm lookin' at you) instead of one that involves collecting baseball cards, owning an impressive amount of vintage instruments or having an insane makeup bag, I do have one dilemma.

I'm not very good at decorating bedrooms.

I WANT to be, but I'm just not. Growing up, all of the decorating power I had was in my bedroom. Living at home, I had that ONE room to make my own. I used to love redecorating my room. My sister and I (well, mainly me, she was like 8) devised this plan, where we would tell our Mom that we wanted to "switch bedrooms" almost every summer. This way, she'd allow us to reimagine, repaint and redecorate our bedrooms. It worked for a few years, we got the annual trip to IKEA and Canadian Tire to help us refresh our spaces, we'd trade furniture and during the week my sister and I would take the bus together to good ole downtown Port Coquitlam and hit up the Salvation Army where we would find of my favourite treasures.

So I know that sounds like a really interesting origin story about my pathway to obsessive decorating, but I'm sure you're wondering, "if you've had so much experience decorating the one and only room you could claim as your own, how could you be bad at decorating bedrooms?"

I guess it comes down to the fact that when you have ONE room, that room needs to be lots of things. An expression of your personal style and taste, a space to work or study, a space to sleep and rest and a place lounge and relax. I used to imagine my bedroom like a tiny studio apartment. And, I will say so myself, I was good at that. What I'm not so good at, is making a bedroom, JUST a bedroom.

My favourite bedroom in my adult life has been my last one:

Looking back now, I wish I had taken more photos of it. This one was just from a comfy Sunday morning with my BAE (Mr. V, of course - ew, I hate that I just said BAE...and capitalised it!) who was actually sitting on the other side of the bed!

Anyway, my new point of obsession is the bedroom, in this new place. I'm not exactly sure what my plan is yet, but I'll post some of the rooms I am drawing inspiration from! What have you done to make your bedroom feel extra "you"? What is your favourite part of your bedroom? Share! I'd love to know!

  • let's talk about LITTER BOXES

so, if you know me at all, you know that I am OBSESSED with Penelope-Lloyd (our baby cat that we adopted from the SPCA last year). I love our cat, and while I want our home to really feel like its her home too, I do have an issue with the litter box.

In our old home, we had two bedrooms, so the second bedroom became what i called the "poop palace", which was essentially her litter box, my accessory collection, my desk which I never sat at and a bed for friends or family who slept over (which, by the way, never happened).

It was perfect for storing it away so we didn't have to think about it, but now that we've moved into our new place, i've been struggling to find a good spot for it.

Currently it's sitting in the space below our tiny built in desk. Ideally, this would be my (or OUR) workspace but right now, it feels like the only space where we can hide the kitty litter and give our baby Pen some privacy while she does her private business. So that's going to need to change.

In my dreams, this is what my desk would look like:

(which, a big L-O-L to that, because it's a tiny built in desk, but a girl can dream!) Currently, it's a bit preoccupied.

SO, in an effort to find myself a solution to this problem, and also for all of those people out there astounded by the looming reality that their cats have indeed taken over their homes and there is no hope to be stylish AND have a one bedroom apartment AND have a litter box...well....do not fret, because there is hope indeed.

I have found the beauty of all litter boxes:

I KNOW, it's amazing. It's also the cat equivalent to $1 million dollars. So, I will give you an update on whether I could find some loving carpenter to make this and fill the hole in my heart left by a litter box or if I ventured into the world of DIY-ing this bad boy...because tbh it doesn't seem that difficult??? *she says with an infalted ego*

If you're in need of one ASAP and would like to skip the DIY, you can find some pretty nice ones here:

Welp, that's me. This is my life. Litter boxes, desks, the internet. Here we are.

  • INSPO journal

Well, I've wanted to start a blog for a long time. I've been stopped many times by the way the blog should look, the kind of content I should post and basically...my perfectionism has stopped me from writing! But, you know what? I am OBSESSED with home dêcor and design, and I really do n eed an outlet, so that I don't annoy everyone in my life with "real talk: can we discuss shapes of a dining table" every day. So, this is an invitation, if you're into this kind of stuff, to follow along!

    A bit about me:

    1) I'm a redheaded graphic designer/art director for a Canadian furniture retailer (who I shall not name specifically in this article, but if you search around my site you will be able to figure it out!)

    2) I am a shameless cat mom! V obsessed with my cat Penny. I have always been a dog person, but she changed me. Seriously, go get yourself a kitten from the SPCA.

    3) I love accessories, style, décor, design, art, colour, admiring DIY's (Im not really much of a DIY-er, but I do love when someone pulls one off that looks better than just purchasing something new), I almost NEVER wear pants. Ohhhhhhh yes ;) , haha no - just kidding, for some reason I just love dresses and skirts. Once I figured out that if you wear a dress to work, its like going to work in pajamas, I never went back.

    4) I'm an introvert to the core. Cut the small talk, and lets just lounge at (our own individual) home and text each other, right???

    5) My partner is a Teacher, we will call him Mr. V here, and we just moved from beautiful beachy White Rock to Coquitlam (where I grew up!)

So, what are the contents of this amazing blog going to be, you ask?

As I just mentioned above, I just moved, and I'm changing LOTS about my place. I'm going to start with some mood board planning, and then some "before/current" photos. I've got a lot of my furniture in, but not a ton really SET up. So, welcome to the INSPO journal. Full of thoughts, images, inspo and a journal of where I'm at.

If you are into following along with a more immediate part of my life, I am also on insta! Follow me here.

    Enjoy!

(ps. thats my cat, Penny in the left photo!)
